Most of the time, movies and TV have a negative effect on my mood. They’re sedentary time sinks, likely to send me into a miserable tailspin of self-loathing and binge watching — so I try to avoid both. Most of the time.
As with every rule, there are exceptions. There are a few happy movies and TV shows that have a positive effect on my attitude. They never fail to make me smile and leave me feeling better about the world.
So here are five happy movies; surefire mood boosts (for me, anyway). Oh and feel free to throw shade at my sometimes-cheesy taste in film. Cheesy = cheerful.
6. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 (1, too, but 2 is the best)
SO. EFFING. CUTE. Six words: “There’s a leek in the boat!” And sentient strawberries. And marshmallow families. And flamangoes.
5. Last Holiday
The story of a woman who finally casts of the shackles of fear and uncertainty, Queen Latifah owns this flick. It’s sweet, it’s funny and it features LL Cool J (DROOL). Oh, and it’s Christmasy. ‘Nuff said.
4. Joe Versus the Volcano
Tom Hanks’ best movie, IMHO (some might disagree). Also with an adorable turn by Meg Ryan as three separate love interests, this flick features the best quit scene in the history of ever. Here’s one of my favorite quotes, which sums up the movie’s premise pretty well: “My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know. Everybody you see. Everybody you talk to. He says that only a few people are awake and they live in a state of constant total amazement.” #beawake
3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
If you haven’t seen this 80’s classic, you might be living under a rock. Or you were born in the 00’s. Either way, you’re missing out. Ferris has so much to teach us. The boy follows his bliss. And this choreography win ranks right up there with the happiest movie scenes of all time.
2. 12 Dates of Christmas
Okayyyyyyyy here’s when you’re maybe allowed to poke fun at my motion picture preferences. Yes, this originally aired on ABC Family. Yes it’s a Christmas-themed Groundhog Day. Yes, it stars Zach from Saved by the Bell (who’s MORE handsome as a grown man, IMO — I was always a Slater girl). But it’s SO AWESOME. You guys, just give it a chance. Amy Smart is eternally charming, it’s set in Manhattan at Christmas, and it offers some amazing life lessons. For instance: be unafraid, open your heart to others and let the past stay in the past. <3
Will Ferrell in an Elf costume, Zooey Deschanel singing and “I just like smiling, smiling’s my favorite.” BEST MOVIE EVER. (Btw, have I mentioned that it’s only 121 days till Christmas?!)
