Be grateful, dammit.

In a world designed to make us want more of, well, everything (except maybe cellulite) — it’s way too easy to obsess about what we don’t have. We need more money, more clothes, more vacations, more Instagram likes, more hours in the day, more iPhone apps. Etcetera for all eternity.

But what we’ve got is a lot. Hence all our #firstworldproblems – if nothing else, at least we can ironically acknowledge the fact that life is pretty charmed in Uncle Sam’s abode.

The more time I put in on this planet, the more I realize gratitude is likely life’s most important lesson. Being in an “attitude of gratitude” (a la motivational great Zig Ziglar), can change your entire existence from top to bottom. I kid you not. Adopting a shift change from wishing you had more of everything to appreciating all your small (and big) blessings offers all kinds of crazy power.

So be grateful. In fact, be so damn grateful that you’re overflowing with positive energy. Be Pollyanna, dammit. That chick was a master of the glad game.

Pissed about something in your life? Wishing you had better clothes, a new boyfriend, a different job? Hating some current condition? Find elements to be grateful for and I assure you, you’ve taken the first step to something new.┬áIf rain ruins your beach day, appreciate that you don’t have to water your plants. If your car breaks down, give thanks for your rock star mechanic. If your new hair cut is hideous, be stoked about your epic collection of fedoras. There’s always something worth applauding.

To really reap the benefits and get that positive juju flowing, you need to make this a tangible process you do every single day. Make a list in the morning or evening to remind yourself of all the amazingness that your life offers. Keep it in a notebook or write it on a dry erase board. There’s nothing better than waking up or drifting off to sleep while counting your blessings. Warm fuzzies for the win! You have more than you realize, I promise.

Still think you’ve got nothing? You need a reality check – and a break from the Kardashians. Whoever you are, you’ve got plenty of things to thank the universe for. Here are a few of mine – big, small and in-between.

  • Biscoff spread
  • My dogs
  • Sunshine
  • Good health
  • Doing what I love
  • Hot showers
  • Neon pink nailpolish
  • The best friends in the universe
  • Pumpkin spice lattes
  • A Canes win
  • My tattoos
  • Sunrises
  • My amazing mom

And so on and so forth. I could literally go on all day about the awesomeness around me. It’s EVERYWHERE. It is in your life, too. You’ve just gotta stop and take a closer look.
