When it comes to health, happiness is everything.

The idea that state of mind directly affects health and well-being is no longer airy fairy, intangible or attributable only to new age gurus. Science backs it up.

In the words of Dr. Kelly Turner, “During the past 50 years, scientists have discovered not only that the mind and body are connected, but that they are intimately and inextricably intertwined.”

It all boils down to this:

Stress hormones make us sick. 
Happy hormones make us healthy.

Specifically, stress hormones like cortisol, adrenaline and epinephrine send signals to our body to “flee” (IE, send blood rushing to all the wrong places while ignoring our immune system) while happy hormones like serotonin, dopamine, relaxin and oxytocin send signals to our body to boost its immune response. Happiness and health are BFFs.

As it turns out, even five minutes of laughter can give a major boost to our white blood cell count. Laughter seriously is the best medicine.

So why aren’t we screening funny movies in hospitals? Why don’t offices open board meetings with stand-up routines? Why do grown ups take everything so damn seriously? Why isn’t the happiness of its citizens our society’s top priority? 

The Western world has its values skewed.

Your happiness is all important. Store it on a shelf along with your high school yearbooks and sweaters with shoulder pads and you’re more likely to be sick, miserable and frustrated.

This much is clear: happiness is an idea whose time is come. Nothing is more important. So stop sacrificing your happiness for anyone or anything. Don’t put it aside for any perceived obligation or societal convention. Pursue it. Own it. And laugh your ass off along the way.

    hey Hannah, you said in one of your articles that exercise did a lot for you in terms of improving your depression…could you email me and let me know how often or how many hours you exercised and how long did it take til you started to notice the depression decreased?? Thanks!
